The Incas valued gold as a cult object only and it was revered as a gift of the gods. Those who came from the Old World in search of the precious metal saw things very differently. The treasure of the mysterious Indian prince El Dorado once drew them to Colombia. They thought the treasures were at the bottom of a mystical lake near the capital Bogotá.
But the region has not revealed its secret to this day, and so El Dorado became a byword for a place of fantasy.
